Puerto Rico's unemployment rate rose to 6.4% in August 2025, the highest since July 2023, from 5.7% in July 2025. The number of unemployed people increased by 13,000 from January to August 2025, totaling 79,000. The percentage of employed individuals working fewer than 34 hours weekly increased to 24.2% in August 2025. Puerto Rico's record low unemployment rate was 5.2% in May 2025 and record high was 14.1% in October 2015.

The Puerto Rico unemployment rate shows the percentage of the labor force actively seeking work but unable to find it. It is calculated by dividing the number of unemployed persons by the total labor force (employed plus unemployed) and multiplying by 100. The labor force excludes those not seeking jobs.
