New Zealand Unemployment Rate
New Zealand's unemployment rate rose to 5.2% in the second quarter of 2025 from 5.1% in the first quarter. This is the highest rate since the third quarter of 2020. Employment fell by 0.1% and the employment rate dropped to 66.8% from 67.1%. The underutilisation rate increased to 12.8% from 12.4%. This occurred as New Zealand's economy contracted by 0.9% in the June 2025 quarter. Declines in manufacturing and construction drove this contraction. Annual wage inflation slowed to 2.4% in the second quarter of 2025 from 4.3% a year earlier. New Zealand's record low unemployment rate was 3.2% in Q4 2021 and record high was 11.2% in Q3 1991.
