Canada Housing Starts
Canada's housing starts rose by 14.3% in September 2025, reaching 279 thousand units. This followed a decrease in August 2025, when starts were 244 thousand units. The increase was driven by construction in Toronto and Montreal particularly for multi-family units. Canada's record low housing starts was 161 thousand units in April 2020 and record high was 321.28 thousand units in March 2021.

Canada housing starts track new residential construction projects begun monthly nationwide. CMHC calculates this metric using survey data. The monthly starts are seasonally adjusted and presented as an annualized rate. The month-over-month change compares this rate to the prior month.
