South Africa Retail Sales YoY
South Africa's retail sales year-on-year decreased to 2.3% in August 2025 from 5.7% in July 2025. This slowdown occurred as annual consumer inflation moderated to 3.3% in August from 3.5% in July mainly due to lower food and fuel price increases. Consumer confidence fell to -13 in the third quarter of 2025, showing increased pessimism which typically reduces consumer spending. This waning confidence is the primary reason for the slower retail sales growth despite moderating inflation. South Africa's record low retail sales YoY was -47.6% in April 2020 and record high was 87.1% in April 2021.
